Mount Kerinci is one of the highest volcanoes in Indonesia surrounded by dense forests that are part of the Bukit Barisan mountains in Jambi Province. The mountain is 3,805 meters above the sea level, extending from north to south with a width of 13 km and a length of 23 km. In this mountain region various flora grow like mahogany tree, rafflesia flower, giant suweg. For the fauna in it are tapirs, cuscus, elephants, long-tailed monkeys, and there are also around 140 species of birds. The crater is on the northeastern side of the mountain peak with yellowish water. Mount Kerinci is one of the mountains in Indonesia that is loved by nature lovers and local and foreign mountain climbers, so there is no doubt the natural beauty on this mountain.
Climbing to the summit of Mount Kerinci takes two days. For that you must prepare carefully and bring climbing equipment that is very complete. We recommend to be with a travel guide if you have never climbed to the top of Mount Kerinci.
TRANSPORTATION.
For those of you who want to travel to the Gunung Kerinci area, you can take a road trip from Jambi city Jambi Province or Padang city, West Sumatra Province. Transportation that we recommend to get to this area, you can use a private car / rental or you can also use public transportation. First, first select the route to the Sungai Penuh area, as a gateway to Mount Kerinci. The route from Jambi city to the Sungai Penuh area is around 500 km for 10 hours. For public transportation, you can choose the bus that goes to the city of Jambi to the city of Muara Bungo followed by a mini bus to Sungai Penuh. While the route from the city of Padang to Tapan then proceed to Sungai Penuh around 278 km for 7 hours. Another alternative from Padang to the location is around 211 km for 5-6 hours. For public transportation, you can choose the public bus from Padang-Sungai Penuh. From the Sungai Penuh area this is the starting point for various interesting places around Mount Kerinci.
ACCOMMODATION.
Some lodging on Sungai Penuh that you can choose from is Mahkota Hotel on Jalan Depati Parbo, Koto Lebu Sungai Penuh. For those of you who want to climb Mount Kerinci we recommend staying the guest house the night before on Jalan Raya Kayuaro, namely: Paiman guest house, Wandi guest house, Darmin guest house, and Subandi guest house. Because at the inn rented camping equipment including tents which became a mandatory choice to carry when climbing. The price of lodging in the Sungai Penuh area averages around Rp. 100-200 thousand.
The following routes and posts that you must pass during the ascent to the summit of Mount Kerinci.
Jungle Door - Post 1 (1900 masl). The journey from Pintu Rimba to Pos 1 can be reached in 30 minutes through tropical forests with relatively gentle slopes. At Pos 1 there are huts / shelters that are still feasible to serve as shelters
Pos 1 - Pos 2 (2000 masl). The journey from Pos 1 to Pos 2 was taken in 30 minutes, the climbing terrain was still sloping. There is a water source around Pos 2 in the form of a small river that flows profusely in the rainy season, the location is on the left side of the hiking trail.
Pos 2 - Pos 3 (2250 masl). The journey from Pos 2 to Pos 3 is taken in 45 minutes, the track starts uphill, sometimes steep. In Pos 3 there is a hut / sherter that can still be used for shelter but the place is not large enough and only accommodates 1 tent.
Post 3 - Shelter 1 (2500 masl). From Pos 3 to Shelter 1, it can be reached in 1 hour 45 minutes through wet tropical forests with quite steep terrain. At Shelter 1 there are enough fields for 5-6 tents.
Shelter 1 - Shelter 2 (2950 masl). The journey from Shelter 1 to Shelter 2 is more uphill than the previous route, when the rainy season the track is slippery and many fallen trees are crossing along the climbing path. From Shelter 1 to Shelter 2 can be reached within 3.5 hours. In Shelter 2 there is an iron frame which is very suitable for camp sites before going to the top. In Shelter 2 there is also a source of water in the form of puddles / clear water reservoirs that are always full in the rainy season, the location is on the left side of the iron frame down approximately 100 m.
Shelter 2 - Shelter 3 (3200 masl). The journey from Shelter 2 to Shelter 3 will be taken in 1.5 hours through an uphill and slippery waterway. The pathway in the form of a tunnel with steep terrain sometimes has to hold on to the roots of the tree. Arriving at Shelter 3, we will be treated to extraordinary views, visible in the distance of Mount Seven Lake and the Grit Tuo Village that is clearly visible if the weather is not foggy. Shelter 3 is an open and wide flat place on the left side of the hiking trail, very good for setting up tents. Around this area there are also water sources.
Shelter 3 - Peak Kerinci (3805 masl). The journey from Shelter 3 we can see how the terrain leads to the Peak of Mount Kerinci. We will go through rocky and sandy terrain following several ridges. The journey from Shelter 3 to the Peak of Mount Kerinci can be reached within 3 hours. 15 minutes before the summit we will meet memoriam known as Tugu Yudha, to commemorate a climber named Yudha Sentika who was lost and his body not found. Arriving at the top of Mount Kerinci we can see the amazing panorama of the volcanic crater. We recommend that before 10:00 a.m. you have to come down from the top because of the risk of thick fog.
